Spirulina packed in white HDPE plastic bottles is NOT protected from oxygen degradation (the oxygen molecule passes right through HDPE plastics) which can dramatically reduce nutrient potency in as little as 30 days after packing.


 

Does "NITROGEN FLUSHING" of plastic bottles protect Spirulina from oxygen degradation?

No. Many Spirulina brands claim to "Nitrogen Flush" their plastic HDPE bottles prior to filling, to remove the oxygen from the bottle, but the HDPE plastic has a high permeability to oxygen, so oxygen quickly re-enters the bottle through the HDPE plastic (read below) and can reduce the potency of Spirulina in a short period.

Oxygen is a very small molecule – small enough to go right through HDPE plastic and destroy the antioxidants present in Spirulina. For example, the natural beta-carotene in Spirulina, unlike synthetic, is not stabilized with preservatives, and it must be protected from oxygen.

Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina is the only Spirulina product in Australia that is properly protected in the bottle from oxygen degradation.
