SPIRULINA IS A RICH SOURCE OF ZEAXANTHIN IN HUMANS
Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid found in nature, and has been associated in several observational studies with lower incidence of age related macular degeneration(AMD). This is a common eye disease in the elderly, and can result in severely impaired vision.
Zeaxanthin is very common in nature giving colour to paprika and saffron etc. but is particularly rich in high grade spirulina. A recent study investigated if spirulina in the diet increased serum (blood) zeaxanthin concentration, and found a single serve of spirulina increase serum levels from 0.06 to .15 μmol/L. The study concluded spirulina can serve as a rich source of dietary zeaxanthin in humans.
Zeaxanthin levels in spirulina differ wildly due to variance in species selection, processing and packaging technology. Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina contains 9mg. zeaxanthin per three gram serve, higher than any other brand. These high levels are due to the ideal growing conditions in Hawaii, the unique Ocean Chill DryingTMtechnology, and LOCTECTM packaging which protects the delicate nutrients present in spirulina from harmful oxidative damage.

New Independent Lab Testing of
Spirulina Products Shows
Hawaiian Spirulina is Highest in Levels of Key Nutrients and Purity
Cyanotech consistently strives to produce the highest quality products, and we invest heavily to do so in research & development and in our culturing and processing methods. This investment is proven valuable when we test Hawaiian Spirulina against other Spirulina producers. Samples of Spirulina powder raw materials of Chinese origin as well as bottled product sold on the US market were recently tested with notable results:
- Hawaiian Spirulina tested higher across the board in levels of all key nutrients
- Carotenoid levels were double in Hawaiian Spirulina on average compared to other products
- In particular, levels of nutrients often lacking in vegetarian diets showed dramatic differences
-
- Hawaiian Spirulina averaged 140% more Vitamin B12
- Hawaiian Spirulina averaged over 4 times more Iron
- Levels of Lead in Hawaiian Spirulina averaged 7 times less than others tested
- 25% of competitive samples tested positive for irradiation, one of which is a commonly sold bottled product in the US Market
“For over 25 years, we have stayed true to our mission to provide the highest quality, most healthful products made from microalgae,” said Dr. Gerald Cysewski, Cyanotech’s Founder and Chief Scientific Officer. “This testing validates our success in maintaining a huge quality advantage over off-shore competitors.”

Hawaiian Spirulina shown effective for anemia, immune function
Leading immunology researcher M. Eric Gershwin, MD and a team of scientists from University of California Davis and Cyanotech found excellent results in a recent human clinical trial. Hawaiian Spirulina was administered to 30 subjects over age 50 for twelve weeks. Key blood chemistry markers were measured at 0, 6 and 12 weeks. The study found a steady increase in hemoglobin in both sexes with women benefiting more rapidly from Spirulina supplementation. The study also found improved immune blood markers in the majority of subjects. This study suggests that Spirulina supplementation may be a logical, nutritional approach for people 50 and older who are often subject to weakened immune systems and anemia.
With the world population rapidly aging and record increases in the 50+ age demographic, Spirulina seems to be the single most important supplement for anyone born before 1960. The highly respected AARP Magazine (which is the world’s largest circulation publication) ranked Spirulina “the #1 supplement to add years to your life.” Spirulina’s vast array of additional benefits for cardiovascular, eye & brain health, its anti-viral and anti-carcinogenic properties combined with the immune building and anemia-preventive properties further validated in this research all corroborate AARP Magazine’s position.
